The platform is a construction with reference to two polaric cultures: Korea and Japan with a unifying gesture for dialogue, referencing an architectural typology that is disappearing in both countries.
Historically, these rest-stop like institutions were common, offering a little comfort and company to weary travelers. They would each settle down on platformed seating , getting nourishment and rest before taking off again. These convivial road-side establishments are quickly disappearing - leading way to mass-catering impersonal vending machine-like structures.
Due to its strong and expressive nature, cultural identity can sometimes develop polarizing qualities especially in regions of historical tension. These polarizing qualities can be rooted in our environment and our cities and should be tackled as an opportunity to celebrate diversity and difference even in cases of deep historic disagreement. A City for Two is a place for dialogue and appreciation. It is a neutral territory celebrating cultural identity as a whole.
